A Discovery of Witches

I read.  Everyday. Multiple times a day.  I don't mean just the usual emails, meeting agendas, etc.  I mean books and stories, mostly fiction.  I read as an escape, to destress, to relax and for enjoyment.  I am happiest lost in the pages of a good book.

I don't claim to know what books everyone will enjoy but I do feel comfortable sharing books that strike my fancy.  I went to the thrift store and this book was sitting off-kilter on the shelf.  It caught my eye - half out of the need to fix it and half because I wanted to see the spine to determine if I wanted to check it out.  I picked it up and looked at the cover and knew that I wanted to read it.  Yes, I pick books by the cover and the title.  I do read the summary on the back but mostly I have to be attracted to the book first.

This is how I came to read "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness.

Amazon: A Discovery of Witches &  BN: A Discovery of Witches

From BN.com: In a sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches became the "it" book of early 2011, bringing Deborah Harkness into the spotlight and galvanizing fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and the descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont. Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar's depth to this riveting story of magic and suspense. And the story continues in Book Two, Shadow of Night.

This book was fantastic from page one until the very end.  Oddly enough the 2nd book in the trilogy comes out on July 10th only a few short days away! It was fate that brought me to the book (cheesy, I know!) just in time to read the sequel.

What good books have you read lately?

  1. I'll have to go pick that up, it sounds like it's right up my alley!

If you're into witches and stuff, try Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files". The first book in the series is Storm Front. It's about a Wizard in Chicago who has a private detective agency. There are like 13 or 14 books out, so if you like them, you'll be in books for a while. I went through 5 in a week, once.
